MLA is the abbreviation for the Modern Languages Association <\/em><\/strong>which\nis an organisation established to develop guidelines which range from grammar\nusage to journal publications and much more. All of these guidelines pertain to\nHumanities, Language and Literature. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just as you need to cite your Research Papers, essays, thesis, dissertations and assignments according to a recommended style, you need to follow MLA citation style if you are a Humanities student. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The whole format consists of the Font, the font size, the line spacing,\npagination and many more elements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Text Alignment<\/td>\nThe alignment will be kept as Flush Left with an uneven right margin.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Paragraph Indentation <\/td>\n\u00bd\u201d (or five spaces)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Sentence Ending & Spacing<\/td>\nIt is advised to leave one space after a period or full stop. You can leave two spaces if your teacher prefers it that way.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Pagination <\/td>\nInsert the page numbers on every page in the upper right margin. Leave \u00bd \u201cspace from the top and flush with the right margin. Your last name will be added after the page number.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Making a Title Page<\/td>\nUsually made if requested by the teacher. <\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Insertion of Tables & Illustrations<\/td>\nTables and Illustrations are placed close to the text. \nTables are labeled as \u2018Table\u2019 and given a number. The caption of the table appears below the table.\nAll pictures or graphs or charts are labeled as \u2018Figure\u2019. The captions or labels appear underneath the concerned picture or graph or chart.\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

  • Choose the paper carefully<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    Don\u2019t go running changing the paper size AFTER starting your Research\npaper. Remember that you have to check the paper size beforehand only. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The recommended paper size is 8.5 x 11 inches. You should however\nconfirm the size from your teacher as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    • Make an attractive header<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

      You can either place your format heading at the top of the first page,\nor you can create a title page separately with the following components:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Your full name<\/li>
      2. Your instructor\u2019s name<\/li>
      3. The name of the class or course<\/li>
      4. Due date of the assignment<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
        • Maintain consistency throughout the paper<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

          For MLA format, double spacing is to be done in the whole of the paper.\nThis includes the title page and the bibliography section as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          You cannot use single spacing in one section, and double spacing in the\nother. That would give your paper a very bad look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          • Left align your text please<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

            While some papers require justification of the text, for MLA format you\nhave to Left align the text and keep an uneven right margin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            • Don\u2019t forget to insert the page numbers!<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

              Leave \u00bd or 0.5 inches space from the top of the upper right margin for\ninserting the page numbers. Also add your last name after the page number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
